Behavior Health Assessments for Cats: What to Expect
We understand that addressing your cat's unwanted behavior can be a frustrating and stressful experience. You don't have to navigate this journey alone! Our goal is to provide comprehensive and integrated behavioral treatment to guide you and your feline friend toward behavioral recovery.
Part 1: In-Person Behavior Health Assessment
This appointment takes place at our NW Portland facility. Prior to your visit, our team will conduct an in-depth review of your cat's behavioral and medical history. During the appointment, Dr. Valli will perform a thorough physical and behavioral evaluation, discuss possible diagnoses and necessary medical rule-outs, and collaborate with you to develop a short-term diagnostic and treatment plan. This plan may involve environmental and social changes, thermal imaging, medications, and/or additional diagnostic tests performed at our practice or your primary veterinarian's clinic.
After your appointment, you'll receive informational handouts and a detailed clinical summary, and your primary veterinarian will be updated on your cat's treatment plan.
For scheduling, please allow up to 1 hour and 15 minutes for this appointment.
Part 2: Virtual Appointment
Conducted via Zoom, the follow-up session consists of Dr. Valli reviewing how effectively you have implemented the short-term plan, discussing any screening or diagnostic tests performed at Synergy, and collaboratively developing a long-term strategy for your cat's behavior. This plan may include behavior modification, medications, supplements, dietary changes, and other environmental or social adjustments. Occasionally, Dr. Valli may request to view areas of your home that are relevant to the treatment plan.
Following this appointment, you and your primary veterinarian will receive a detailed clinical summary, including any diagnostic results.
For scheduling, please set aside up to 30 minutes for this appointment.
Follow Up
Dr. Valli will establish a personalized follow-up schedule to support you and your cat throughout the initial treatment phase, typically lasting 2 to 4 weeks. After this phase, you'll continue working with our veterinary support team and trainers to enhance your cat's behavior, while Dr. Valli will oversee and manage your cat's care. Email communication for simple questions about your cat's treatment is included with the doctor appointment fees, while more complex inquiries may require an appointment with a Behavior Technician or Veterinarian.
The first Behavior Progress Evaluation with Dr. Valli will occur 6 months after the initial consultation. To remain an active client, you and your cat will need to meet with Dr. Valli every 6 months.

Get Started: Registration and Pre-Consult
To begin, fill out a Veterinary Behavior History Form for each cat you would like us to assess. The more detailed the information you provide, the better our team can tailor the treatment to your cat's needs.
Once we receive your cat's form, we will reach out to schedule the in-person and virtual appointments. The appointment fee will be collected at the time of scheduling. If you cancel at least a week before the appointment, all but $200 is refundable.
